One of the most visited tourist destination of Delhi , Qutub Minar was built in 1199 by Qutub-ud-Din. The sultan's successor and son-in-law, Iltutmish, completed the construction. The purpose of building this beautiful tower is still not very clear. It is believed by some that, it was built as a tower of victory to signify the beginning of the Muslim rule in India

Taj Mahal is known have been inspired by Humayun's Tomb, and in many ways this magnificent red and while building is as spectacular as the famous Taj Mahal in Agra. Tomb is memorial by a grieving wife and was built by his widow Haji Begum in 1565-66, nine years after his death.

The splendor of this grand monument becomes overpowering on entering through the lofty double storeyed gateway. It is set in the centre of a large square garden enclosed by high walls on three sides, while the river would have been the forth boundary. The Chahar Bagh is divided into smaller squares by pathways as in a typical Mughal garden. The fountains were worked with simple yet highly developed engineering skills quite common in India during that period.

The hot seat of power of the sub-continent, the symbol of control, the Red Fort locally known as Lal Qila built of Red Sandstone was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Annual Independence Day parade is held on the open grounds in front of the Fort. The light and sound show held in the evenings bring to life the Days as it was over the years with important events, which have marked the history of India. The Red Fort is one of the most magnificent palaces in the world. India's history is also closely linked with this fort. It was from its ramparts that the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawharlal Nehru, announced to the nation that India was free form colonial rule. The Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, after ruling from Agra for eleven years, decided to shift to Delhi and laid the foundation stone of the Red Fort in 1618.

The museum has limited display but still it has a beautiful collection of photographs covering the Nationalist movement and personal and public life of Nehru-Gandhi family. The collection gives a visual narration of her life from childhood to her last days. Apart from some personal belongings of Mrs. Gandhi, one can also view her still laid out simple drawing room and study room through the large glass. The museum conserves her blood stained sari, which she wore on the day she was assassinated.

Jantar Mantar is an astronomical observatory with masonry instruments, built in 1724 by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur. It houses a huge sundial and other instruments intended to show the movements of the sun, moon etc. This massive salmon colored structure is only a short stroll down Sansad Marg (parliament street). A short stroll down Parliament Street from Connaught Place, is a strange collection of salmon-coloured structures called Jantar Mantar, consisting of several strange looking constructions which are infact very accurately and scientifically devised astronomical instruments for carrying out an organised study of celestial bodies in absence of the telescope. It is also known as the Yantra Mandir. A huge sundial known as the Prince of Dials dominates it.
Straight down the road from Rashtrapati Bhavan is this landmark, a 42-meter high arch War memorial built in memory of innumerable soldiers who laid down their lives during the Afghan war and World Wars. A flame, Amar Jawan Jyoti, is kept perpetually alive here. The stretch of lush green lawns spreading from here is a major crowd puller. It bears the name of the 85,000 Indian Army Soldiers who died during the wars. Below the arch is the memorial to the Unknown Soldier. India Gate, the majestic structure, is set at the end of Rajpath, perhaps the most beautiful area of New Delhi with plush green lawns in the backdrop. Designed and built by Lutyens, it was originally called All India War Memorial in memory of the Indian soldiers who died during the Wars.

The seat of Indian Parliament is a marvelous piece of architecture designed by the famed architect Lutyens and constructed under the direct supervision of Sir Herbert Baker. Visitors are not allowed to loiter inside the building without special permission, for security reasons. For the foreign visitors permits are given only after they obtain an introductory letter from the respective embassy. Designed as a circular structure, the House is 171 meters in diameter and about one-third of a mile in circumference. The two semicircular house chambers flank the Central Hall with its impressive dome. The building has a continuous open corridor on the first floor fringed with a colonnade of 144 creamy sandstone pillars. The exterior walls of red sandstone are carved in geometric patterns that echo Moghul jaalis. It is a marvellous piece of architecture which can be admired only from outside on account of security restrictions. It is domed almost circular structure about a kilometer in circumference and is the seat of the Indian Parliament.
Located in the centre of the old city, this congregational mosque was built by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1423. Built in yellow sandstone, it combines the best of Hindu and Muslim styles of architecture, standing on 260 pillars supporting 15 domes at varying elevations. It is described as the most beautiful mosque in India. It is located in the centre of the old city. It is the country's largest mosque, built in 1656, where thousands of Muslims offer prayers. It lies opposite the Red Fort and is surrounded by a large number of shops, which deal in a variety of goods.

The National Museum is located on Janpath, south of Rajpath, housing an excellent collection of bronzes, terracotta sculptures, paintings and costumes, which give a detailed insight into Indian history and way of life. The collection consists of rare coins and pottery dating back to the Mauryan period (2nd-3rd century BC), exhibits from the Vijayanagar period in south India, miniature and mural paintings, and costumes of the various tribal people. It also has the largest collection of artifacts dating to the Indus Valley Civilization. The museum is definitely worth visiting. The museum has a rich variety of all facets of ancient Indian history and also of central Asia. The museum takes one through a fascinating journey of what ancient India was all about, pottery, rare coins, and numerous such things including art and architecture, costumes.
